Social Responsibility

Creating a safe workplace for all our employees is a top priority at Northgate and we endeavour to ensure that safety remains the highest profile activity among all employees at our mining operations and exploration and development projects.  Our objective is to continuously improve our safety performance with the target of operating with zero lost-time injuries and our ultimate goal is to be among the safest mine operators in each of the jurisdictions in which we operate.

In our efforts to achieve and to maintain high standards of health and safety, we:

  • work together with employees, their union representatives and management in an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust to resolve issues early
  • consider health and safety as the top priority in the design and operation of all facilities
  • inform and train all employees, supervisors, contractors and members of our Joint
Health & Safety Committees about safe work practices, duties and responsibilities under applicable legislation
  • develop and provide training for the protection of the health and safety of our employees
  • maintain and practice appropriate emergency preparedness procedures
  • run regular workplace inspections and program audits
  • work continuously to expand knowledge concerning our processes and products
  • promote healthy lifestyles through appropriate programs and policies
  • develop health and safety programs to implement this policy
  • expect everyone to work and act safety at all times, to be accountable and to accept their responsibilities for preventing accidents, occupational illnesses and injuries

Northgate has received recognition for its achievements in the area of Health & Safety:

  • Edward Prior Safety Award from the BC Ministry of Energy and Mines
  • Edgar A. Scholtz Medal for Excellence in Mine Development
  • Since 2000, the Kemess mine has won over two dozen top place finishes in the North Zone and Provincial Mine Rescue Competitions, with both individual and team efforts in the areas of first-aid, field, fire and smoke, and rope tasks.
  • In 2006, the Kemess mine broke new ground in its commitment to promote healthy lifestyles among its employees by establishing a Wellness Program, in which workers formed teams on site to compete in lifestyle improvement.  With the success of this program, similar initiatives have since been established at many other mines in
British Columbia based on the Kemess model.
