Kemess Mine Recruitment

Northgate owns and operates the Kemess mine, a large open-pit gold and copper mining operation located in north-central British Columbia, approximately 300 kilometres northwest of Mackenzie. 

Kemess is a fly in/fly out operation with a 5,000' lighted airstrip, 540 room camp, first aid, exercise and recreation facilities. Flights are provided from Prince George and Smithers for employees on the 2x2 work schedule. Depending on availability, flights are provided from Vancouver, Kelowna, Kamloops, Williams Lake, Prince George and Smithers for employees on the 4x3 work schedule.

We are currently recruiting the following positions to join our team:



Electrical Foreman
This position will report to the Mill Maintenance Superintendent and the ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years experience as an Electrical Foreman or equivalent related experience. The incumbent will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all site electrical maintenance.

The successful candidate should meet the following criteria:
  • 5 years experience in large open pit mining environments working with 240 plus ton diesel electric trucks, late model P&H 2800 and P&H 2300 electric shovels and mill industrial electrical experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in managing high voltage distribution systems up to 250 KV.
  • A strong background and understanding of distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controls (PLC) and microprocessors.
  • Strong computerized maintenance planning skills preferably with Mincom or Maximo planning systems.
  • Proven ability to meet production and safety goals.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills, as well as good oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills along with the ability to work independently and the ability to work well with all departments.

This position will work a two-week in two-week out rotation. Flights are provided from Smithers, and Prince George.

Electrical Planner
The Electrical Planner will report to the Senior Maintenance Planner. This position will be responsible for providing electrical planning services for day to day and preventative maintenance of all mobile equipment, high voltage and fixed mill components. The successful candidate will possess the following criteria:

  • Solid electrical knowledge ideally coupled with a technical, trades or post secondary education.
  • 3-5 years planning experience
  • Past experience working within a Maintenance Management System
  • Proven ability to plan and organize electrical tasks both short and long term
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines while working within budget
  • The ability to work well in a team environment with other departments
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be computer literate with experience using maintenance systems, Maximo software experience would be a definite asset, as well as MicroSoft Excel
  • Previous experience in a remote fly in / out camp environment is preferred

This is a fly in / fly out position, working a Monday to Thursday rotation of 4 days on / 3 days off. Flights are staged from Vancouver, Kamloops, Kelowna, Williams Lake, Smithers and Prince George, B.C.

Welder
This position will report to the Mine Maintenance Shovel/Drill Foreman and is responsible for maintaining and repairing mobile equipment. The successful candidate must possess:

  • a valid Level "A" Certification of Trade and pressure ticket qualification ideally coupled with an inter-provincial journeyman certificate
  • strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team

This position will work a two-week in two-week out rotation. Flights are provided from Smithers, and Prince George.

Heavy Duty Mechanic
This postion will report to the Mine Maintenance Foreman and participate in a two-week in and two-week out  work schedule. The successful candidate must possess a heavy duty mechanic BC certification of trade qualification, ideally coupled with an interprovincial qualification. Previous experience repairing and maintaining Euclid R260 haul trucks, Catapillar equipment, P&H and Hitachi shovels along with Atlas Copco and P&H drills is preferred.

Mill Maintenance Foreman

This position will report to the Mill Maintenance General Foreman. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years experience as a Mill Maintenance Foreman or Leadhand in a copper/ gold processing plant. Previous experience on SAG and Ball mills, flotation, dewatering and crushing circuits as well as knowledge of large slurry pumping operation is preferred. The successful candidate must meet the following criteria:
  • Post secondary education and/or BC Trades Qualifications is preferred
  • Highly organized with an ability to work under pressure
  • Computer literate with experience using maintenance systems (Maximo preferred)
  • Strong communication and leadership skills; ability to work in a unionized environment
  • Proven ability to plan, organize and multi task maintenance jobs safely within budget
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to work independently

 This position will work a two-week in and two-week out work schedule.

Millwright
This position will report to the Mill Maintenance Foreman and participate in a two-week in and two-week out work schedule. The successful candidate must possess a millwright BC certification of trade qualification, ideally coupled with an inter-provincial qualification. The successful candidate will have 2 years of Sag/Ball Concentrator experience.

Mine Operations Foreman
This position will report to the Mine Operations General Foreman. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a mine operations crew plus coordinate with the Drill/Blast Foreman while on day shift. This position requires a minimum of 5 years related experience. The successful applicant must possess a valid BC shift boss ticket. Other key qualifications include:
  • Experience supervising open pit production crews and large mining equipment (electric shovels/200 plus tonne trucks)
  • Capable of understanding and complying with daily and weekly engineering plans, while meeting or exceeding production targets and adhering to strict environmental regulations
  • Highly organized with an ability to work under pressure
  • Strong communication and leadership skills; ability to work in a unionized environment
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to work independly
  • Computer proficient

This position will work a two-week in and two-week out work schedule. Flights are provided from Smithers and Prince George.

Electrician
This position will report to the Electrical Foreman and must possess a BC electrical certification of trade or have an inter-provincial qualification. The successful applicant should meet the following criteria:
  • Minimum five years of industrial electrical experience.
  • Knowledge in the maintenance of electrical and process control equipment in ore processing control equipment in ore processing plants.
  • A strong background and understanding of distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controls (PLC) and microprocessors.
  • Experience working in open pit mining environment preferably on diesel electric trucks and large electric (solid state) rope shovels.
  • Familiarity working with high voltage distribution systems up to 25 KV.
  • Proven ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Prefer a candidate(s) with previous experience in a remote camp environment.

This position will work a two-week in and two-week out work schedule. Flights are provided from Smithers and Prince George.

Mine Maintenance Foreman
This position will report to the Mine Maintenance General Foreman and the ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years experience as a Mine Maintenance Foreman or equivalent related experience. The incumbent will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a mine maintenance crew. The successful candidate should meet the following criteria:
  • 5 years experience in large open pit mining environments working with various models of Caterpillar equipment, Hitachi excavators, 260 ton diesel electric haulage trucks, P&H 2800XPB and P&H 2300XPB electric shovels and Hitachi EX5500 hydraulic shovel.
  • Strong computerized maintenance planning skills preferably with Maximo planning systems.
  • Good communications skills both oral and written.
  • Proven ability to meet production and safety goals.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills along with the ability to work under pressure and in a unionized environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to work independently and the ability to work well with all departments.
  • Computer proficient.

Instrumentation Mechanic or Instrumentation Mechanic Apprentice
This position will report to the Process Control Supervisor and must possess a valid Instrument Mechanic certification or trade qualification (Red Seal Certification). The apprentice candidate who has completed their third year would be given preference. The successful candidate should meet the following criteria:
  • A minimum 3 years experience in an industrialized setting.
  • Familliar with Allen Bradley PLC's, Foxboro IA DCS as well as flow, pressure, temperature, level instruments and control valves.
  • Must have good computer skills and be familiar with excel and windows software.

This position will work a two-week in and two-week out work schedule. Flights are provided from Smithers and Prince George.

Accounting Technician
Reporting to the Mine Accountant, the successful candidate will be a 3rd or 4th year CGA or CMA student, with preference given to applicants with resource industry experience and a working knowledge of Oracle Financials. Knowledge of Maximo software would be an asset. Primary job responsibilities will include preparation of journal entries, accounts receivables, preperation of sales tax remittance, general ledger account reconciliations and assistance with the preparation of month-end financial statements. We are looking for an individual who possesses strong communication skills and works well both independently and as a part of a diverse team. This position offers excellent opportunities for professional development.

This position will work a Monday to Thursday rotation of 4 days on and 3 days off. Flights are provided from Vancouver, Kamloops, Kelowna, Williams Lake, Smithers and Prince George.

Mill Operations Superintendent
Reporting to the General Manager, the Mill Operations Superintendent will be responsible for the efficient operation and metallurgy of a 50,000 tonnes per day plant. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years experience as a superintendent in a copper/gold processing plant as well as a sound working knowledge of SAG mill operations, flotation operations and tailings pumping. Other key qualifications include:

  • Strong leadership skills
  • Proven ability to meet safety and production goals
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Previous experience working successfully in Union environment
  • Computer literacy skills and Microsoft Office products
  • Professional designation with associated metallurgical engineering or related degree with membership or eligibility for membership with APEGBC

Metallurgical Process Control Engineer
The successful candidate will work as a part of a team focused on the optimization of milling processes and metal recoveries and must be able to work closely with both the Metallurgical Engineering and Process Control groups and assist in the implementation of process control strategies. The ideal candidate will meet the following criteria:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Metallurgical, Electrical or Chemical Engineering
  • Minimum of two (2) years of industrial experience
  • Thorough knowledge of field instrumentation, DCS (Foxboro) and PLC control systems
  • Strong leadership and communication skills;

Young-Davidson Recruitment
Young-Davidson is an underground and open-pit gold development project located near the town of Matachewan, Ontario, approximately 65 km west of Kirkland Lake, Ontario, and is owned 100% by Northgate. Currently, a new ramp is being installed along with dewatering of the old shaft. At this time, six surface diamond drills are delineating ore with a seventh drill due to start from underground in September 2007.
